MetaCast MDC finds itself on-the-grid thanks to some very tasty wraps by Burgess Hill based AMD Innovations…
Legends Cars represent the heart and soul of a unique formula in British Motor Racing. It’s a formula that’s all about wheel-to-wheel action and short, sharp and furious racing with big-grids. It’s competitive, with more overtakes in a single race than Formula One can claim in a year. Despite that, the formula says it has the friendliest paddock in motorsport!
The cars that power the formula are replicas of 30s Chevy, Ford and Dodge sedans and coupes. With 120+ BHP motorcycle engines providing the ‘go,’ it’s action rather than authenticity that’s the motivation though. The formula, with its fast and furious changes of position and its quirky cars is a real crowd pleaser.
One of the teams the formula fields is Mickel Motorsport. The team puts VIP hospitality at the centre of its efforts and ladles on plenty of adrenaline packed action. Its cars have high profile personalities too.
Burgess Hill based AMD innovations are responsible for the racing liveries used by Mickel Motorsport. The company is a broadly talented signs and graphics manufacturer that attracts all manner of work from an equally diverse range of clients. With Mickel Motorsport and its needs in the portfolio, the diversity quotient takes the idea to an extreme. It’s not every day that you get to wrap 30s replica race cars.
The cars themselves are squat and very muscular with bulging arches and few places that poor wrap alignment can hide. Wrapping them requires expert design and preparation, and very committed and skilled hands when it comes to getting the graphics applied. All, thankfully, can be found at AMD.
AMD designed the liveries its client needed in house. They both reflect sponsors brands and even a wonderful homage to a car that’s become a movie celebrity. Getting the design to fit the vehicle was a challenge, particularly with the level of detail that was involved and that needed to align correctly. Challenge met - and overcome.
The AMD team printed its designs on Metamark’s next-generation premium cast wrapping film, MetaCast MDC and laminated it with a protective layer of the film’s matching laminate, MetaGuard MGC. The car is an exercise for both the film and the applicator. It’s not in the least forgiving and offers no hiding place for bad technique. That doesn’t seem to have troubled AMD. The application is brilliant and even close examination can’t find application errors that are not there.
The wraps are designed to last a season and they will. Next year, they will need changing and that will be made all the easier by the film’s MetaGlide Adhesive. The adhesive makes application that little bit easier with very obliging repositioning characteristics, but despite a powerful ultimate bond, will remove cleanly when needed.
Not every wrap that comes AMD’s way will be as technically difficult as Mickel Racing’s Legends cars but when the goal is delivering the customers something that’s as close to perfection as possible, that doesn’t matter. It’s a wrap’s job to turn heads and AMD’s work clearly does that and does it brilliantly.
The cars are Legends. And so is the team at AMD Innovations.
