The potencof large format print as means of communication hasn’t been lost on the wider world and in particular on educators. Whereas educational establishments once operated behind anonymous anti-brands such as ‘school’ or ‘college,’ these days they powerfully project identities that are all their own and performance is on the table whenever one is compared to another. 

Hall Cross Academy is an exemplar of a successful modern learning establishment. It serves Doncaster and the surrounds and it’s situated on two campuses not far from the town centre. Almost 2000 students think of it as home and it has a busy sixth form with about 450 students. 

The Academy has done much to create and promote its own brand in recent years and Barnsley based Turner Signs has been proud to contribute to its progress having provided it with much signing and print. As evidence of the establishment’s promotion has spread within the academy and impressed itself on those who work and learn there, individual departments at the academy have wanted to voice their own mission and sense of being too. 

The latest work that Turner Signs has designed and produced for the academy reflects the importance of literacy and celebrates its cause and influences through the ages. There’s no better place to make a big point concerning a big subject than upon the  very walls that surround it and so Turner Signs has provided a range of almost landmark scaled murals with content reflecting and depicting the subject and derived works.

The installation is technically accomplished and undoubtedly does the job intended. It can cast itself in the same arena as other graphics that can be enjoyed for the ambient décor effect they contribute, but that comprise a very involved level of detail that just goes on giving the closer and more often it’s examined. 

Close scrutiny doesn’t need to worry the team at Turner Signs. The wall graphics are printed on Metamark MD5-H, and they’re laminated with a protective layer of Matt MG700. The laminate will protect the superb quality print from the inevitability of knocks and bumps and it manages reflections well too. Turner Signs’ printing is of the highest standard and the company has a legacy that traces to brush and paint and so knows a thing or two about lettering and its layout too. That shows. 

There’s a point to be made about literacy in the general sense and surrounding enquiring minds with reminders about it can only be a good thing. Turner Signs’ work for Hall Cross Academy stands as a credit to its cause and a very good example of the application to which digital wide format print can be applied.
