When the sun goes down and lights go out, the six-thousand pairs of eyes an hour that are said to see a vehicle livery when it’s out on the road disappear with them. Put another way, vehicle liveries are a potent means of promotion, but they work best during daylight hours.

Bridgend based Elite Signs and Graphics has reached deep into its toolbox, and into Metamark’s though, and created a stunning livery for its customer GuardTech that rather turns conventional understanding of how liveries might perform in the dark on its head. When the lights go out, this particular livery springs to life, lighting up brightly when caught in headlights and other directional light sources, and positively demanding attention.

The customer, a regular at Elite Signs, wanted something faithful to the design of its logo and type but with a ‘bit of a twist’ something that ‘gets attention.’ Elite Signs has delivered and in spectacular fashion.

The livery was produced by the team at Elite Signs using Metamark MD-RF which Simon James and the team printed using their Roland wide-format inkjet printer. The novel Metamark material is made of a layer of MD-Class vinyl sat on the top of a layer of retro-reflective adhesive. The EcoSolvent ink, being transparent, allows light to travel through it, and through the MD-Class vinyl into the adhesive. It’s then reflected strongly back to the light source. In dark conditions, the printed material contrasts very strongly with the surrounding matter and lights up very powerfully. The effect is dramatic, unexpected and really eye-catching.

The team at Elite Signs has achieved a great result with Metamark MD-RF. The material was printed according to the client’s design, and then cut and applied to the vehicle’s flanks. The elements of the design, being cut and applied, are located within areas of high contrast. Oddly, had the van been white, the results would have still been equally dramatic at night. It’s a trend-setting result that other are sure to want to emulate.

Elite Signs and Graphics has made a real name for itself in progressive vehicle livery design in South Wales and way beyond.
