Sometimes, it’s the tiniest of detail that helps a sign make the biggest impact. Barnsley based Totty Signs has just completed a fascia signing project that makes that point brilliantly…

In terms of tried and tested production formulas that are applied to the art of making fascia signs, the folded ACM tray with applied routed lettering would appear to have run out of space for improvement. That’s not the case though. Barnsley based Totty Signs has recently installed a fascia for its client Forever Sewing. It’s a sign that makes the point that there’s always room for improvement, and that the tiniest of details count.

Totty Sign is a family run business that knows a thing or two about signs. The company was started by the current management’s father, Brian Totty, a gifted signwriter, noted wit, and all round nice bloke too. Brian’s teachings and example have permeated the company. His appreciation of lettering and layout serves to anchor the company’s output in the realms where signs, for no reason that can be easily explained, just look ‘right.’

Traditional skills help pilot a thoroughly modern company. Totty Signs is well equipped with printers, routers and all the trappings of a progressive sign producer. It just happens though that Totty Signs can extract tunes from its production ensemble that have a touch of individuality that distinguishes all they produce. Its work for Forever Sewing is a simply brilliant example.

The sign comprises a fabricated ACM tray as per the contemporary prescription for such things. The lettering elements are mounted to the tray on stand-off connectors. Again that’s a pretty standard production format. That though, is where any similarity with other fabrications is left behind and the differences take off.

The connectors are mounted into routed recesses in the lettering so that, when fitted, the routed shapes sit a little closer to the fascia sign tray than they otherwise would. There’s a good reason for that. The tray is wrapped in Metamark MD5 and the areas of the material in approximate register with the lettering have been printed with, of all things, a very subtle shadow that grounds the routed shape. It sound unconventional and it is.

The effect is Brilliant. Capital B intended.

The implied shadow adds a dimensional emphasis to an already dimensional sign. The whole effect is one of exemplary quality and it stands as proof that this very inventive embellishment has yielded a sign that’s head and shoulders above similar fabrications. A tiny detail. A very big effect.
