Signs Express (Portsmouth) helps deliver a new attraction in Southsea and really puts it on the map…

Putt Hutt is a new attraction in Southsea, near Portsmouth, that opened its doors in August of 2023. It promises endless fun and lots of cherished memories and, nestled as it is within Southsea’s vibrant Clarence Pier, they’ll be no shortage of fun-seekers wanting to give it a try. 

Putt Hutt is golf-themed. It ‘puts’ eighteen holes at the mercy of the players who attend, all under cover in a very accommodating building put to its new purpose. The first nine holes are designed along traditional lines and the back nine very creatively pay homage to nostalgic rides and attractions that have made the pier a much loved landmark in the area. 

The attraction prides itself for offering something for all the family to enjoy. The nineteenth hole will give everyone the time and space to tell golfing war-stories while having a bite and a drink, so making Putt Hutt the complete package and something of a gem among the surrounding attractions.

The job of helping turn the cavernous void of a building into the colourful and attractive spectacle it’s now become started as a routine incoming enquiry for Signs Express in Portsmouth. The design had been previously agreed and Putt Hutt was looking for a signage company able to manage the production and installation of the large project. Signs Express Portsmouth is no stranger to large sign projects and won the job.

From a signmaker’s perspective, a job like provisioning graphics and ambient functional décor at scale is as much a project management challenge as it is a production and installation job. Every element that comprises the overall effect or theme needs to be understood in its application and situation context. The job actually comes together after production and application and typically involves numerous tweaks where elements might have been incorrectly specified. Experience counts though, and the Signs Express team have done a brilliant job.

Signs Express elected to use MetaGrab® MD5-UB for the Putt Hutt job. This product can be thought of as MD5, but specially engineered for challenging surfaces. It features a novel, ultra-tack adhesive that hangs on resolutely to practically any sound surface, even if its heavily textured. The stunning prints Signs Express produced using the MD5-UB are protected by a tough layer of the product’s matched laminate, MG-700, so the occasional bump and golfing battle-rash isn’t going to be a problem.

The job may have come to Signs Express Portsmouth as routine but the outcome is anything but. Thanks to Signs Express, Putt Hutt shines among the other attractions around the pier and it’s sure to attract visitors time and time again.
