Matt and Egg On Legs Design are no strangers to each other. Egg On Legs’ Marc Ward and Matt have worked through Matt’s alter-ego, Goo Design, on numerous projects that are now head-turning features of the Sheffield sign-scape. It’s a creative alliance with proven potential and it’s been taken to another dimension along Electric Avenue.
Matt Launched his new collection at the Sheffield bar, Heist. That worked well. Matt is the resident artist at Heist and his murals grace its walls. Egg On Legs work is much in evidence too - Marc and his team took care of all Heist’s branded ID and signing.
Matt Cockayne’s Electric Avenue collection was printed by Egg On Legs. The pieces comprise a top-quality aluminium composite substrate with the print itself applied. Marc used Metamark MD5A-B for the print. Colour is particularly important to an artist and all the more so when it’s washed with neon light. The MD5A-B more than holds its own and the colours really punch out.
The art’s subjects are informed by what Matt sees around him. That’s Sheffield, family - including a cat, and local colour. The neon is a novel accent and perfectly counterpointed by the print - it’s both congruent and discordant - yet it succeeds in being part of the subject.
Metamark MD5A-B doesn’t cast itself in the role of an art medium. In the right hands though, it looks as though it now has a new talent to claim. Under the glow of the neon, the blocking adhesive is keeping the colour under control and the air escape adhesive ensures the surface is perfect.
